World Suicide Prevention Day 2026: Every Conversation Matters
10 September 2026
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day 2026, a global awareness day dedicated to encouraging conversations, reducing stigma, and reminding people that support is available and that no one should struggle alone.
At Briar Chemicals, we recognise that mental health is just as important as physical health. Creating a supportive workplace where people feel able to speak openly, seek help, and support one another is something we believe is everyone’s responsibility.
Raising Awareness in Norfolk
Suicide continues to have a significant impact on individuals, families, workplaces, and communities across the UK.
Locally, around 90 lives are lost to suicide each year in Norfolk, with more than 15,000 people affected by the grief and loss that follows. Norwich has consistently recorded the highest or second-highest suicide rates among Norfolk’s lower-tier local authority areas. Around three in four deaths by suicide are men, although suicide can affect people of any age, gender, or background. The risk is particularly high for men in their 40s and adults aged over 80. Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a colleague, and a community. This is why raising awareness and encouraging early conversations are so important.
The Importance of Checking In
Many people experiencing emotional distress may not show obvious signs that they are struggling.
A simple question such as “How are you really doing?” can open the door to an important conversation. Taking the time to listen without judgement, checking in with a colleague, friend, neighbour, or family member, and encouraging someone to seek support can make a meaningful difference.
While we may not always know what someone is going through, kindness, compassion, and connection can help people feel less alone.

Together, we can help break down stigma, encourage people to seek support, and remind those who may be struggling that they are never alone.
